Whether your story is big or small we want to know about it, by sharing your experiences you can inspire others to be healthier happier people.
Some years ago, an acquaintance’s sudden demise made me reconsider my lifestyle.
Unfortunately, this involved someone of similar age, weight and occupation to myself, suffering a fatal heart attack whilst playing football with friends.
It dawned on me that I needed to address my situation (overweight and inactive), however the combination of running my own business and having two young children meant time was precious.
With that in mind, I chose to start commuting by bike. The results were not short of astounding. Within weeks I had lost weight and colleagues were asking why I was so positive and energetic as soon as I arrived at work. ‘Man flu’ became a distant memory and ‘losing pounds whilst saving pounds’ only encouraged me to continue.
Commuting extended to weekend riding, which in turn moved on to endurance events. The result has been a 20% reduction in weight (and new wardrobe). I have no stress issues (unless I don’t ride) and enjoy a happy, healthy and fulfilled lifestyle. Try it – you'll love it...
At the age of 34 I was asked to raise money for a family member who had just been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I agreed to take on the challenge, which was a duathlon (run/bike) around Loch Ness in Scotland.
I hadn’t ridden a bike properly since I was a kid so decided my normal commute was a way of getting prepared for the challenge. My car commute was a massive 6 miles each way so decided to start with riding in 3 times each week.
I bought a cheap bike and I started riding
….well I say “I started riding” after day one I was knackered!
In the first week I managed to cycle in twice and then slowly began building up speed and fitness. Within 4 weeks I was doing 4 days each week at 14mph!
I have never looked back, after saving a ton of money each month in the build up to the ride I decided to carry on with cycling to work. Now 8 years later I still ride into work and have my own Guinness world record in cycling!
